My Kitchen: Classic French Toast

I was a kid that learned to cook at a very young age. In fact, I can’t even remember a time that I wasn’t helping in the kitchen in one way or another. My parents taught me the basics early on – I could scramble eggs, make a grilled cheese, and boil pasta in elementary school. I firmly believe that kids should be able to feed themselves early on (being safe of course), and some of my earliest memories are in the kitchen. My mom ended up teaching me most things, but there’s one recipe I remember learning from my dad, and that’s French Toast.

I’m a purist when it comes to my French Toast. I don’t do fancy toppings or berries or whipped cream. I keep it simple – quality ingredients, add a little butter and syrup, and done. Why mess with what’s already delicious?

Anyway, I thought I’d share my recipe today, originally from my dad and tweaked by me over the years. Enjoy!

Ingredients
  1. 1 loaf bread of your choice, sliced (I love to use a nice eggy bread like challah or brioche)
  2. 1 dozen eggs
  3. 1 cup milk (whatever you have is fine)
  4. 1-2 Tbsp Vanilla Extract (I like a lot, so I use closer to 2)
  5. 1 tsp Almond Extract (optional, but I add it to almost every baked good and love it!)
Instructions
  1. Preheat an electric griddle to 350 degrees. If you don’t have one, use a nonstick frying pan at medium to medium-high.
  2. Crack eggs in a large bowl. Add the milk and extracts and mix well with a whisk.
  3. Grease the griddle. You can use butter or cooking spray – whatever you prefer!
  4. One at a time, dunk each slice of bread in the egg mixture. Make sure it gets really soaked and the egg mixture gets into it!
  5. Place dunked bread on the griddle. Cook on the first side until browned to your liking (just a few minutes), then flip and do the other side.
  6. Take off the griddle, add toppings of your choice and enjoy!

    First of all, this sounds delicious! Second, challah bread french toast is my FAVORITE! And third, how did you get your recipe to be in that cool little box that you can print from? I’d love to be able to do that with recipes I share!

      So, 1 – It is. So Good! 2 – Challah bread is one of the best breads ever. 3 – It’s a WordPress plugin. I don’t know if anything similar is out there for Blogger.

    I never really had french toast much growing up, but I really like it now. The vanilla and almond extract sound like a great addition! And I agree about kids learning/knowing how to prepare food for themselves. Starting to get into that with my 6 year old. I loved making eggs and things like that as a kid!

    I’ve never tried almond extract for French toast, I’ll have to add that in next time. I like my French toast like you, plain, I’m not much for all the fancy toppings like my hubby and the kids are.

      Yep, it’s perfect the way it is! Occasionally I do add some strawberries, but I usually keep it simple.

    French toast is my favorite breakfast! I don’t make it often as I’m forever on a diet, unfortunately. The bread makes all the difference, I agree! Your recipe looks really good, and I’ll definitely try it next time. I’m also a purist-butter and Mrs. Butterworth’s! I have the real syrup in the pantry, but it’s too thin and watery for my taste.
