Making Dinner Easier on Working Moms

Making Dinner Easier on Working Moms

Every workday around here ends the same way – a busy day and a long commute home. I’ve never glossed over the harder parts of being a working parent, and without a doubt, the end of the day is one of them.

By the time I get home, Chris and I have both had full work days. Mine started with two daycare dropoffs and his ended with two daycare pickups. By the time we get home, all four of us are tired, ready to relax, and hungry. Since dinner won’t make itself, we start on that right away, but we still always end up eating dinner late – usually around 7pm. It’s a far cry from the 5:30pm dinner I always had as a kid.

I Was Jealous Today

I Was Jealous Today

Dear SAHM friend, I was jealous of you today. Today, as I rushed to work this morning thinking of the day that lay ahead of me, I was jealous of the lazy summer morning you might be having. I was jealous of the early morning snuggles and pancake-making you might be enjoying, instead of a stressful commute to work. While I enjoyed my hot coffee, I thought of you, caught in the world of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or Paw Patrol, trying to squeeze in a few moments for yourself between breaking up fights and the requests for more snacks. While…

Why I’m Done Trying to Fit the “Mom Blogger” Mold

Why I’m Done Trying to Fit the “Mom Blogger” Mold

I have been absent recently, but honestly, it isn’t because anything is wrong. In fact, it’s been the opposite. Coming to this place used to be an escape for me – a place to write, be myself, and get away from all the things I didn’t love – to get away from the job I felt stuck in, mostly. In the past 6 months, that has done such a complete 180 that it’s shocked me. I’m busy in all the best ways, and this little blog of mine has gone from a refuge to a place that I only go…

Working Mom Hack: Breakfast on the Go

Working Mom Hack: Breakfast on the Go

I don’t know about your house, but in my house? Mornings are crazy. Since both Chris and I work full-time, there’s a lot to do in the mornings. All four of us need to be dressed, fed, and ready to go by 7 am – including the sometimes grouchy five-year-old and the overenergetic toddler. There’s a lot of running around, a lot of repeated instructions, and a lot of juggling to get it all done so we can leave on time. I have probably mentioned before that the morning rush isn’t always my favorite, but I am incredibly fortunate…

Love and Pancakes

Love and Pancakes

Last Monday night, like so many nights, I left work at 5:30, got home about 6:15, and immediately started cooking dinner. It also happened to be a night we had breakfast for dinner – pancakes, specifically. We don’t often have pancakes for dinner, but when I realized our freezer stash was low over the weekend I knew I’d need to make more. You see, my girls eat pancakes for breakfast almost every morning before we leave for daycare/school/work. They’re kind of a necessity in our house. I make big batches (usually on weekends) and freeze them for later. Just another…

My Job Update

My Job Update

As you may remember, I switched jobs last month, and that’s the main reason it’s been quiet around here – getting used to a new routine, a new commute, and learning a whole new position and company. Some of you have reached out on Instagram to ask for updates, so I figured it was worth a post, right? Well, to make a long story short, at only a week and a half in, I can say with certainty that I made the right decision. I was at my previous job for 7.5 years. While there was a lot that was…

New Beginnings

New Beginnings

You know that saying about how one door closes, and another one opens? I can never remember the exact wording of it, but it’s exactly my life right now. Big changes are happening in our neck of the woods. What are they, you ask? Well, if you follow me on Instagram, you know that on Friday, I put in my resignation at my current job. Don’t worry, this isn’t some sweeping announcement about quitting my job to blog or anything like that – something like that is just not in the cards for us. Instead, I’m finally moving on to…

What No One Warned Me About Motherhood

What No One Warned Me About Motherhood

Becoming a mom is a huge transition for any woman. You suddenly have another person depending on you (and your partner) for everything. You love this person more than anything in the world, and your life completely changes from the moment they enter it. According to all the books and blog posts, I was prepared to become a mom nearly 5 years ago. I had the gear, I had the clothes, I had the books, and I was as emotionally ready for this little person as I could be. I knew that she would change me. I listened to my…

Real Working Moms Talk: The Benefits of Daycare

Real Working Moms Talk: The Benefits of Daycare

As a working mom, daycare is a necessity in my life. I can’t even begin to tell you the positive impact that daycare has had on my girls, but all too often, I see negative posts about daycare. People saying they could never leave their kids in daycare, that they’re scared of daycare, etc. There is so much unwarranted negativity out there, and that hasn’t been my experience with daycare at all. I think most working parents would agree. I know what benefits my girls have received from daycare, but since I also know I couldn’t possibly cover them all,…

Switching to Preschool

Switching to Preschool

I mentioned in my catch up post last week that we were switching Abbie to a more structured daycare setting, and today’s the day. Today is the day I bring Abbie to a different daycare for the first time in four years. Abbie has been in the same home daycare since the day I went back to work – April 5, 2013. I will never forget the emotions of that first day. Wondering if I had left enough for milk and formula for her to drink. Praying that trusting my gut in picking our daycare was the right decision. So…
