Today is my 37th birthday.
⠀
I’m typically a person who loves my birthday. I love the privilege of getting another year older, of being with my family and learning more about myself. I love the opportunities for growth and the excitement of moving to new phases of my life. I love cake and presents and hugs and being celebrated. But the year I just left? I’m so glad to leave it behind.
⠀
It’s no secret that 2020 has been hard for most of us. It’s tested us in ways we never imagined and for me, it coincided with the worst 6+ months of my life. While I entered 36 with optimism, I spent most of the year falling into and fighting depression.
⠀
I wish I could say I did all the right things, that I got help and I got better, but honestly, only parts of that are true. I had good days and awful, debilitating days - and sometimes the days are still hard. And I need to stop putting off the work to find a therapist.

But I enter 37 today, yet another fresh start in this life. I am changed by what this year held, leaving it in yesterday and looking forward to tomorrow.

So here’s to 37 - and fresh starts around every corner.

[ad] This year has been an incredible challenge for my family - and probably yours too. Sometimes all I want is to make our lives easier during a long day. I’m so thankful we have @Sheetz Drive-Thru just down the street for those times I need a snack my kids love, a sweet afternoon treat, or even dinner when I just need a break.

It’s also my favorite season of the year, and I am so excited that fall drinks are back! While I prefer salted caramel, pumpkin drinks are back too! It’s a sweet way to start your day and help make things a bit easier before starting virtual learning for the day.

I remember last year’s Rosh Hashanah. Entering 5780 full of hope and a desire to draw closer to my faith.
⠀
It didn’t unfold the way I planned. 5780 was full of love and loss, highs and lows. It saw me start the year full of dreams and goals, and midway through everything changed. I lost so much freedom, my job, my independence, and in some ways, my purpose. I was lost for most of the past six months.
⠀
But in the end, those six months ended up giving me the push to reclaim my faith. I started reading more, praying more, finding more ways to bring Judaism into our everyday lives.
⠀
5780 taught me to bake challah. It taught me ways to pass along to my children my faith and their heritage. I found myself slowly becoming more immersed in the beauty of Judaism. So really, 5780 brought me the things I desired, just in ways I never would have chosen for myself.
⠀
As we enter 5781 tonight, I think of the woman I was just a year and how much I’ve changed. It was transformative. So while I’m happy to see the new year, I know that the transformation was real and necessary. I’ll never be the same.

But 5781, can we be a bit more gentle this year? 🍎🍯

We made it through the first day of virtual learning!

It’s far from ideal, but there were moments of light in the day:
-The moment Abbie saw one of her best friends from 1st grade on the screen.
-The moment Abbie got a correct answer in math and got a special Dojo point.
-And in typical Abbie fashion, her posing for these photos on a break.

This quarter, and possibly longer, is not going to be easy. We miss normal. We miss school, friends, and simple things like packing a lunchbox and before-and-after care. I miss the hustle of our old life more than I can say. But this is our reality, and we’re doing the best we can with it. Every day we’ll log in and do the best we can under the circumstances.

One day at a time - and one day, this will all be a memory.

My mom went back to work when I was 16. As a mom of four, she chose to go back to work in retail to allow her hours to work around both school and my dad’s early morning hours. She’s been in retail ever since, eventually moving into the pharmacy and becoming a pharmacy technician. [sponsored]

While being a pharmacy tech is a perfect fit for her, it also put her on the front lines this year, in a way we never expected. Each day, she went to work to ensure her patients got everything they needed. She was never afraid to go to work, despite her being high-risk herself.

As a thank you for all she’s done this year, I picked up a few fun surprises from @loweshomeimprovement to brighten the doorstep. I was able to pick up this sweet sign and two fabulous mums for less than $50 - ready to go and an easy way to brighten her day. It’s an easy way to #BuildThanks and show her just how much we care.

This is what mommy-daughter outings look like nowadays - a mid afternoon 🎯 trip complete with face masks and a minivan Taylor Swift dance party. One day, this will all be a memory, but my girls are taking it all in stride. I’m thankful for that. ❤️

I took a few days off social media and came back to a bunch of new followers thanks to my friend @ariel.loves sharing so many amazing accounts showcasing the Jewish community here on Instagram. So if you’re new (or even if you’re not), here’s a few fun facts you may not know about me!

1. ) I live in northern Virginia with my husband and two girls. In keeping with Ashkenazi tradition, they are named after my grandparents - Abigail after my grandfather, Abe, and Ella after my grandmother, Edith.
2. ) I’m Jewish and my husband is Catholic! We work together to ensure our girls grow up with both our faiths, and what they choose to believe as adults is up to them. It’s unconventional, but it works for us.
3. ) I became a minivan mom earlier this year and I love it. Sliding doors are the best, am I right? 🙌🏻
4. ) I collect cookbooks - yes, even in the era of Pinterest. At last count, I had over 300. I know, it’s a little excessive. 🤷🏻‍♀️
5. ) I believe that life is made of up thousands of small kindnesses. The last few months have been some of the most challenging I’ve ever experienced, but I will never forget the kindness I’ve received during this time. ❤️
