Weight Loss: How Do You Find Time to Work Out?

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been doing Weight Watchers since shortly after Abbie was born.  I’ve already lost the pregnancy weight (yay!) but I’ve got a ways to go to get to a healthy weight and where I want to be.

It’s been tough lately.  Working a full-time job doesn’t leave a ton of time to work out, especially when I want to spend every spare moment I have with my family.  It’s definitely hard to carve out a little bit of time to work out.  Not to mention…I don’t really like working out.  I hate being sweaty.  It just makes me feel gross…even though I know it’s good for me.  Logic does me no good in that department…once I’m sweaty and gross, I get super uncomfortable and all I want to do is shower.

Unfortunately, eating well only goes so far in weight loss.  Regardless of the program you use, basic weight loss is a calorie deficit – burning more than you take in.  I haven’t been doing so well in that lately.

I’m trying to be active where I can.  I would work out at lunch, but I don’t have the time to shower and everything before going back to work.  Instead, I’ve been walking where I can – running errands and window shopping so at least I’m not sitting all day.  Taking the stairs at work.  Getting up and walking around for a few minutes every hour.  Crawling around on the floor after Abbie to play with her.  I definitely need the exercise, especially on days that my eating isn’t as on track as it should be (like a certain time of the month that all I want is chocolate).

What I want to know is how everyone else, especially other moms, finds time to fit in exercise.  Do you exercise early?  Late?  With your kids?  After they’re in bed?  I need your tips – I’ve still got a lot of pounds I want to lose and need some help!

Maybe I need to try this again? Last time (3 years ago) I only made it 3 days…

This would all be so much easier if Jillian was around to kick my butt.  Well, not easy, because she’d be kicking my butt.  Give me your tips, I need them!

  1. Finding the time to workout with a baby and full time job is the hardest thing ever! On the rare occasions that I do actually work out, I do it at night, right after the little one has fallen asleep. I’ve tried the early morning thing, and it’s just not for me…. Hopefully we’ll both figure out how to fit it in our daily schedules!

  2. time and sleep both seem to disappear when the baby arrives! I personally prefer to work out in the early evening when my daughter is in bed, but some nights I just don’t have the energy! Finding time to work out is a challenge for sure.

  3. im totally struggling to find time for jillian! and she absolutely kicks my butt!

  4. Do you have a gym membership? I would be lost without mine. I can put the kids in childcare where they have a wonderful time playing and interacting with other kids and take 30 min to an hour of time just for me. They also have a preplanned routine at my gym so I know exactly what I’m doing and it doesn’t take as long as fumbling around myself. I figure if I don’t take the time to commit to myself now it’s going to be harder later to get in gear.

  5. I have no freaking idea how moms with a full time job outside the house find time to workout. NO CLUE. I’m in awe of anyone that can. My problem is that I only get a couple hours a day to see my kid, so there’s no way I’m sticking him in a stroller for an hour or in a gym childcare center when I have such limited time. I miss him so much – it’s just not worth it to me. That leaves before he wakes up or after he goes to bed, neither of which is an appealling option – at least not until he’s consistently sleeping through the night and I don’t feel like a walking zombie (mombie?) anymore. If you figure it out, please let me know!

  6. At night is one of the options I’ve been considering. It’s so hard though – there’s so much to do, even after she’s asleep!

  7. Oh, yoga while she’s playing is a good idea! I shower at night so morning workouts won’t really work for me 🙁 Plus, there’s always something better to do than a workout!

  8. I don’t – we cancelled it because it was crazy expensive ($80/month for a single membership!). There’s a yoga place across the street that charges per class, so I was thinking of trying that since I could do it on an as needed basis. Maybe one day we’ll belong to a gym again.

  9. Exactly. I wait all day to see my little girl, I’ll be damned if I don’t get to spend time with her! And then even after she’s asleep all I want to do is relax…oh motherhood. I don’t think it’s easy for any of us to work out, even the stay-at-home moms!

  10. (still catching up on my blogs 🙂 lol)
I have three things I try to do: 1) there’s a gym at work and my job is a little flexible so if I take 90 minutes to take the lunchtime class and then shower, it’s okay. I have only been averaging 1/week though, trying for more! 2) I love my hot yoga class, and it’s a big time commitment (~3 hrs away from Z) but I look at it as a treat of “me time” so I try to do that once every two weeks or so, and it makes a BIG difference for me as far as feeling slimmer. 3) My eating habits are the best they’ve ever been. I have noticed that if I avoid dairy, grains, and sweets, my weight is stable without any gym time whatsoever. So when I know that #1 and #2 aren’t working, I apply extra-focus to what I’m eating. None of it is ever easy though!!
