My Three-Year-Old vs. The Potty

My Three-Year-Old vs. The Potty

For the past two weeks, we’ve been dealing with what I consider my most difficult parenting task so far – potty training. At nearly 3 ½, Abbie still doesn’t have any desire to be one of the big kids and go on the potty. Seriously, potty training is not for the faint of heart. As most of you know, we are a cloth diapering family, but when Abbie grew out of her cloth diapers, we knew it was time to really put the push on potty training and picked up a few packages of Pull-Ups. I was cautiously optimistic. I…

My Girl.

My Girl.

The first time Abbie said it, my heart skipped a beat. “Mommy, you’re my best friend.” It was the moment I’d been looking forward to since we found out she was a girl. The moment I’ll always remember as a part of our relationship, a moment I hope to build on for the rest of my life. You see, when my husband and I first decided to start a family, there was one thing I was hoping for more than most.  I was hoping for a girl first… (read the rest here) I’m guest posting over at Still Being Molly…

Abbie Says, Volume 1

Abbie Says, Volume 1

Now that Abbie’s getting older, her vocabulary has exploded. For a while she wasn’t talking that much, and I was trying not to worry, but just keeping a close eye on how she was progressing. Back then everyone kept telling me that when she started talking, it would be all at once – full sentences and everything. Some kids are just like that. Well, now that that’s happened, Abbie is always talking – in the car, in the bath, at meals, when she’s playing, basically any time she’s awake. Her personality is just coming out more and more every day…

Abbie: Three!

Abbie: Three!

Abbie, today is your third birthday.  You are THREE. It’s amazing to me that you’ve been in our lives three years now. I could go on and on and say oh, it seems like yesterday… but to be honest with you, it doesn’t. I’ve enjoyed every moment I’ve had with you in these past three years. Every year has been different, but this past year? this past year was the most fun. Your personality exploded this year, and you’ve let us know exactly who you are. Like I’ve always known, you’re fiercely independent – heaven forbid anyone try to do…

She’s Sweetest in Her Sleep

She’s Sweetest in Her Sleep

Abbie sleeps in her own room, and has since the day we brought her home from the hospital. For a number of reasons, it’s just worked best for us and our lifestyle – she loves her room, loves the safe environment of it, and above all, is a very independent little girl. Because of that, it’s rare that I get to see her asleep these days. Her door is a bit noisy, and changes to her sleep environment often disturb her. But this weekend… I got to see her asleep.   Often I forget just how little Abbie still is,…

Big Kids are More Fun

Big Kids are More Fun

One of the great things about summer is all the fun kids get to have outside – just being kids. This weekend, we celebrated at another birthday party, and Abbie had the best time playing outside. We were celebrating our friends’ son Sawyer, but Sawyer also has an older sister, Ava. We were at her birthday earlier this year, so Abbie remembers Ava (I think). And of course to Abbie, big kids are always more fun. She’s always tried to keep up with them. With the exception of the babies at daycare that she spends her week with, Abbie’s never really…

Mommy

Mommy

Over the weekend, Abbie did something I wasn’t sure she’d do for a while, and it took me completely by surprise. She said “Mommy.” Not Ma. Not Mama. Not Mom or “MomDad DadMom” as she often refers to Chris and I. She said Mommy. Kids say Mommy. Not babies, not toddlers. Kids.   This is where I’m supposed to be all nostalgic, right? The whole “my baby is growing up too fast” and “slow down time” thing right? The truth? I’m not sad at all. I’m so excited. I LOVE that she’s now calling me Mommy. I LOVE that she’s…

My Daughter Has Pierced Ears

My Daughter Has Pierced Ears

…and I don’t care what you think about it. Few things get me worked up when it comes to parenting and opinions. I’ve always been firmly in the camp of not caring how you raise your kids as long as they’re happy and healthy. What works for my family may not work for yours, and vice versa. I’m all about support, but for some reason, when this article popped up on my newsfeed yesterday… it set me off. It’s literally one of the stupidest things I’ve ever read in my life. I am rarely one to leave long comments on…

Signs You Have a 2.5 Year Old

Signs You Have a 2.5 Year Old

Abbie will be 2 and a half next month, and toddlerhood has definitely been an adventure for us. Want to know what it’s like? Well, you might have a 2 1/2 year old if… You are constantly watching kids shows. You work hard to learn the names of all the characters on said kids shows (I still only know about 3 on Dora and Friends…) Your kid’s favorite thing to draw with sidewalk chalk is Mickey, and she asks for it EVERY time. You become well-versed in the crazy words your kid uses that actually sound NOTHING like the real…

Abbie’s Room

Abbie’s Room

Most of you know that we bought our house last fall. Since we’ll be in this house a while, I have full intentions to decorate the whole house. This is the third place Chris and I have lived since getting married in 2011, but it’s the first that’s really felt like ours. I have so many plans, but the very first room I wanted to finish was Abbie’s. Abbie’s room is the smallest of our three bedrooms, and that’s on purpose. Honestly, she doesn’t spend a lot of time in there just yet, but I know she will. She will…
