Fed is Best: Support for Feeding Choices

You know what guys? Sometimes, feeding babies is hard, and sometimes it’s easy. Sometimes it’s somewhere in between.

I’ve talked about it before, but my breastfeeding journey this time around has been infinitely easier than it was with Abbie. I’m sure a lot of the difference is that I’m much more experienced this time around, but I also know it’s because Ella is an easier baby.

With Abbie, I had all sorts of struggles with breastfeeding – getting her to latch, keeping her awake for feedings, getting her to eat enough, low supply, not responding to the pump… almost every problem you could have. I was able to give her breastmilk at least part time until just after she turned six months old before completely switching to formula. I really loved nursing and being able to provide for her in that way, but you know what? I actually loved formula feeding too – it had so many different perks I never anticipated. I am absolutely in the camp that when it comes to babies, fed is best – no matter how you choose to do it.

That’s what we need as parents – choices, and support for our choices. That’s one of the reasons I love Happy Family’s new free support platform for parents. It not only provides information on the many ways you can feed your baby, but also has lactation specialists and certified nutritionists available Monday through Friday from 8am-8pm – for FREE. I struggled to nurse Abbie for most of those first six months, and I could have really used the support of a lactation specialist. The main thing that stopped me was the cost, and I would have loved to have a free resource like this platform.

Nursing Ella, on the other hand, has been a completely different experience – she latched on immediately, loves to nurse, and so far my supply has held up. I feel like since I had such a hard time with Abbie, I have a huge appreciation of my nursing journey with Ella. I’m always looking for ways to make sure I keep my supply up and I love that there are so many more resources out there than four years ago.

Even though it has been easier this time around, I do sometimes still need help and reassurance. The Happy Family feeding platform has become one of my favorites – so much information and I love that live help is just moments away. We started solids with Ella a little while back, and the Happy Baby platform includes guidelines on how to introduce those as well. So far, my little girl loves to eat, so I’m looking forward to exploring different foods with her as she grows.

Whether you breastfeed, supplement, use formula, or use donor milk – as long as your baby is fed and happy – that’s the most important thing. It’s so important as moms to support one another and share our resources. Make sure you check out Happy Baby’s site here and pass it on to another mom who might need it!
