The Adjustment to Being a Big Sister

I’ve now gotten to the point in life as a mom of two that it’s hard to remember life with just one. Ella has seamlessly blended into our family, and I’m so grateful the transition has been smooth. A lot of that smooth transition is due to just how well Abbie has adjusted to being a big sister.

We're two months into being a family of four, and thankfully things seem smooth so far. So much of that has to do with how well our oldest has adjusted to being a big sister.

I have to admit, before Ella was born I was a little bit nervous about how Abbie would do. At nearly four, she had definite personality (and sass for days) and ideas on what she did and didn’t like. She was used to having all the attention on her, especially since she was also the first grandchild on both sides. We did our best to get her as ready as we possibly could for Ella’s arrival, and I think we did a good job… because she’s just blossomed into her role as a big sister.

Every morning when Abbie wakes up, Ella is the first person she asks about. She thinks it’s funny to guess what color her poop will be (ah, four-year-olds). She helps me out when I’m nursing by grabbing me random things just out of my reach – a blanket, the remote, my Kindle. Every time I put Ella on her playmat, Abbie snuggles in right beside her. She’s constantly touching her, kissing her, and showing her videos on her Kindle (sorry Abbie, she has no idea what you’re doing).

The transition has gone better than I ever could have imagined, and it seems Abbie was just meant to be a big sister. Ella already stares at her with wonder, as if she’s already trying to figure out her big sister and just how fast she can be like her. Their relationship so far is everything I could have hoped for.

I don’t know what the future holds for their relationship, but for now I’m so incredibly grateful for these two girls. I love that they have each other, and that I get to watch my girls learn to be sisters.
