A Skincare and Makeup Post…Just Because.

As I was waiting for my in-laws to get into town last night (they didn’t get to our place until about 1 in the morning by the way – they were delayed over 9 hours getting here), I couldn’t think of anything to blog about today.  Then I got ready for bed and took my makeup off…and I realized I hadn’t really talked about my makeup since our wedding.

Not that I’m an expert, but since my friends and family often ask what I use, I thought I’d share.  I’ve found things over the years that work well for me, and products I buy again and again.

Skin

I’ve got relatively normal skin, just a few breakouts here and there…and a nose full of blackheads that I can’t ever seem to get rid of.  I’ve heard great things about Mario Badescu’s Silver Powder lately, and I think that’ll be the next product I try.  Here’s what I’m using now:

Cleanser: I like a mild cleanser, and I typically use it with my Clarisonic.  Right now I’m still using Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple – I bought a HUGE bottle a while back and still haven’t run out.  It lasts forever.

Moisturizer: Cerave Moisturizing Lotion.  I love this stuff – it’s water based so it absorbs super fast, and it leaves my skin hydrated, but not oily.  It’s also pretty cheap – only $11 for 12 ounces!

Eye Cream:  I’ll admit, I’m not great at remembering to put this on, but my eyes would probably look at lot less tired if I remembered.  I’m currently using Benefit’s It’s Potent.

Face Makeup

Concealer:  Benefit again – their Erase Paste.  I have cool undertones, and this matches that.  It covers my undereye circles and minor blemishes really well, and the cream consistency blends easily.  It’s a small container, but it lasts a long time.

Foundation:  I’m a liquid foundation kind of girl.  I find it super easy to blend, and I love the finish it gives when I set it with powder.  I’ve been using Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Foundation for probably 2 years now.  I’m really fair, and the color is perfect for me, and it definitely lasts all day.

Sponge:  I’m a devotee of the BeautyBlender.  I had a knockoff for a long time, but I got the real thing about a year ago…and I’m hooked.  It works really well when its damp, and lets me build my foundation to the coverage I want without looking cakey.  I did get the cleanser too, and it definitely makes the sponge last longer and work better to clean it on a regular basis.

Powder:  I always set my foundation with Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder in Translucent.  I’ve tried the HD powders and colored powders and pressed powders, but I always come back to this.  It’s silky, sets my foundation, and doesn’t add any extra color.  Perfection.

Blush:  I am definitely a blush girl rather than a bronzer girl.  I always burn rather than tan, so when I attempt to look tan, I just look ridiculous.  I do play around with blush when I get samples, but I always come back to Nars Blush in Orgasm.  It’s a universally flattering color, and who can’t help but giggle at the name?  I’ve tried cream blushes and stains, but powder just works best for me.

Eyes/Lips

Eyeshadow:  I love eyeshadow.  If I want something new and different in my makeup bag, I’m pretty much always going to try a new eyeshadow.  That being said, being a mom doesn’t always afford a lot of time in the mornings, so during the week I go as basic as possible – just a sweep of Stila’s Kitten on both eyes.  When I do play around, I love palettes – I have a Sephora holiday palette from a while ago and the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette, and I love them both.

Eyeliner:  It took me a long time to even wear eyeliner.  I’ve tried lots of different kinds, but my favorite is Stila’s Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner.  It glides on smoothly and easily, and blends well when I need it too.  Plus, no need for a sharpener – I love that!  I usually stick to brown, black, or deep purple for the color.  I do love the look of liquid eyeliner, but my hand isn’t steady enough for that…yet!

Mascara:  DiorShow – the regular kind, not the waterproof kind.  It’s pricy, but I won’t buy anything else.  I avoid the waterproof kind since the consistency is weird and I feel it doesn’t give me the same results…plus it’s SUPER hard to take off!

Lips:  Most of the time…I just use chapstick.  When I do put color on my lips, I love Laura Mercier’s Stick Gloss in Peony.  It’s just a little deeper than my natural lip color, so it looks really natural.

So, that’s what goes on my face on a regular basis.  Anything else I should be trying?  I love my favorites, but I’m always up for new things!

**I was not compensated for anything in this post – I just really like this products and use them all the time!**

  1. I love these posts b/c I love finding new products. I use the Erase Paste and it is magical. I’ve tried DiorShow mascara, but it doesn’t work well on me (but it was the waterproof kind, so maybe that was it). So sticky.

  2. This makes me wish I did more makeup on a regular basis, maybe co-workers would stop asking if I’m sick/tired? 🙂 Sadly I typically just moisturize + chapstick + curl eyelashes. For a big night out, I do tinted moisturizer (I’ve always been intimidated and not a fan of foundation/powders), a dab of cream blush, tinted chapstick and eyeliner. I’ve never been a big fan of eyeshadow either? Guess I’m not a very good girly girl! 🙂 I am marking down that eyeliner though to try!
