5 Things I Didn’t Know About Having Kids

When you first decide to start a family, you know there are going to be a lot of changes in your life. First there’s pregnancy, and all the crazy things that happen to you because of it. Then there’s the newborn phase, all cuddles and learning and no sleep. As your kids grow, you slowly start to get the groove of things, but parenting can always surprise you. Three years in, I’m still learning and I know I will be for a long time.

So far, a lot of what I thought about having kids has turned out to be true, but there have definitely been a fair share of surprises.

5 Things I Didn't Know About Having Kids

Even after you’re done with pregnancy and nursing, your body is not your own. Your kid needs a chair? Oh, mom’s a good place to sit. Sick with a tummy bug? That goes on mom, not in the toilet. Sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever get my body back to myself.

They are the most unpredictable people you’ll ever meet. Abbie will eat Mac and cheese for days, then suddenly refuse it. She loved avocado as a baby but now won’t touch it. Sometimes she says no even when I’ve just given her the crackers she asked for. So unpredictable.

Sometimes your kid is so cute you just can’t stand it. Are you biased about your own kids? You bet, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t cute. I mean, Abbie just learned how to say “Spaghetti” to smile for a picture and it’s adorable (thanks to my dad for that one). Then there’s also the fact that you ask her why and she always says, “Because.” She doesn’t even know what because means – she just likes the word. See, so cute you can’t stand it.

You’ll buy things in bulk you never thought you would. Seriously, buying in bulk is our best friend. We have a membership to Sam’s Club, and it is SO worth it since we’re always buying things in bulk. There’s the typical things like toothpaste, toilet paper, and paper towels, but I buy things in bulk now that I would never have dreamed of before Abbie was born. Since becoming a mom, my skin has gotten a lot drier and I use coconut oil to make my own body butter. The other thing I need since having Abbie? Poise liners.

Poise Liners

Yep, I know, it’s weird to talk about. Pregnancy and all that happens afterward isn’t always wrapped up in a nice, pretty bow, and sometimes you just need a little help. These Poise liners have saved me countless times. To be honest with you, I wasn’t even sure I’d ever write about them, because, yes, it’s embarrassing. But you know what? This is a product I seriously use EVERY day. Not kidding at all, and I might as well tell you about it since I tell people in real life anyway, right? (They also offer higher absorbency Poise pads if you need those!)

When I went to Sam’s Club last week, the Poise liners were on sale in addition to the great price they already sell them for… and I bought three. Yep, I bought what is basically a year’s worth, which means I won’t have to sneak them in the grocery store cart in front of my husband, or have Abbie parade them around the store (because let’s face it, kids are crazy and will do things like that!).

Your favorite part of parenting may actually be watching your husband be a parent. Chris and Abbie are so close and have so much fun together. It really makes you love and appreciate your husband even more once you’re parents in a way that’s hard to explain.

What have you learned since having kids?

  1. Okay, I laughed out loud when I read Poise liners. Ha ha! I’m so glad it isn’t just me. After Emmy was born I had to change my undies a few times after already peeing. What? You’d never have thought that would happen, but it does and it’s just weird. There are so many things that are big changes after having kids, but so many are things I never would have imagined. I knew I would love my kids, but the love I feel for them is overwelming and more than I ever thought. I have actually said, “I just want to eat your face because you are so cute.” Although I’m really not going to eat their faces I totally mean it at the same time. Kissing those cheeks happens so much. Ha ha!

    1. Glad I could make you laugh! 😉 But for real, I took this campaign because I seriously use them every day. So why not? And yes, I totally get the “I want to eat your face.” Why are they so stinkin cute!!!!?!?!

  2. I always say that thanks to my c-section I don’t have issues like these too often. It also helps that I have a bladder of steel. But I do use them from time to time with my flow because it’s a pain and lasts for 7 days.

  3. Yes to all of this, especially the pantiliners! I am glad we all go through it because it IS embarrassing…I can’t even run anymore!

  4. Yes, yes, and yes! Pregnancy does such weird things to our bodies and even after like you said. My poor bladder will never be the same. My husband laughs at me {and pokes all kinds of jokes} because I have to cross my legs every time I sneeze. Seriously!

  5. Oh my goodness, YES! Kids are so unpredictable… especially when they turn into threenagers. I hear it gets better, though I’m not holding my breath! HAHA Great post!
