post-partum Weight Loss

It’s no secret that I’ve been trying to lose weight for a long time – I was trying before we got pregnant, and restarted once Abbie was born.  I’ve had issues with my weight for as long as I can remember.  My junior and senior year of college, I got serious about it with Weight Watchers – and got down to 135 pounds.  I felt amazing.

Then, as you can imagine, life took a toll after graduation – new job, new life, a bad breakup…and then I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, which can make it even harder to lose weight.

Since Abbie was born, I’ve been on a mission to be healthier for not only myself, but for my family – I want to be around for Abbie a long time.  I debated for a long time if I should share the numbers on here (mostly to keep myself accountable), and I’ve settled on sharing only the total weight gained/lost.

Pregnancy weight gain: 36 pounds

Current weight loss: 48 pounds (23 of them on Weight Watchers, the rest was Abbie and birth-related things)

Pounds to goal: 55

I know I’m not alone in the struggle to lose weight.  I’m lucky in that I’ve already lost my pregnancy weight, but I still have a ways to go.  In the coming months, I’ll try to touch on what I’m doing and how.  I’m once again doing Weight Watchers, since I know the program works.  It’s worked for me before, and I know it will again.  This time, I want to keep it off for good, and be in better shape when we eventually start planning for baby #2.

In addition to counting points, I’ve been paying more attention to the quality of my points, and trying to add more fruits vegetables, and proteins into my diet.  I drink water constantly, and only occasionally have a soda – usually no more than once a week.  Exercise is harder for me – I’ve never particularly enjoyed it, and the heat makes doing anything outside unbearable.  Instead, I try to do little things, like taking the stairs at work more and doing a lap around the building when I need a little break.  So far, it’s helping, but I know it’s only going to get harder.

How have you handled weight loss?

  1. Go you! I’m doing WW too, to lose the baby weight. I gained a ridiculous amount of weight with pregnancy (like 65 lbs!) and still have 15 to go before I’m back to pre-pregnancy weight. It’s so hard! Would love to hear how it’s going and what you’re doing. Motivate me!
