I’ve mentioned a few times that the majority of Abbie’s clothes are from consignment sales. From the moment we were expecting, I’ve been buying about 90% of her clothes that way. It’s absolutely my favorite way to shop for her, and if you haven’t shopped consignment sales for kids clothes before, you are seriously missing out. It’s one of the best ways to stock your kids’ closets. for SO many reasons.
It’s affordable. This is the number one reason I started shopping consignment. Kids grow faster than we ever expect, and go through a LOT of clothes. I’ve heard countless stories from friends where they didn’t even get to use all of the clothes they bought and hated that they wasted the money! Consignment allows you to get clothes at great prices for your kids.
It’s good quality. Obviously, you have some that are better quality than others, but most of the products I’ve seen have been in great shape, especially the infant items since they grow out of them so quickly. For example, I almost never shop for Abbie at higher-end stores because they’re just out of my budget… but she has plenty of them in her closet from consignment sales. I’ve scored so many major brands that i would normally not buy – Gap, Hanna Anderson, Gymboree, and more. I know they’ll last through Abbie using them and any other girls we have too!
It’s seasonally appropriate. Sales are typically held twice a year, fall and spring, with seasonally appropriate items. It allows you to get what you need for the upcoming season before the season starts – this year I’ll be looking for a snowsuit, a winter coat, and maybe a sled. You can find almost everything you need for the season you’re entering.
There’s variety. They have everything – seriously. Usually with consignment you think of clothes, but they have almost everything you can think of for kids (and moms) – car seats, strollers, high chairs, outdoor toys, blocks, shoes, hats, books, maternity clothes, boppys, wagons, toy kitchens… seriously, everything. I don’t know where you’d find the variety anywhere else!
It helps other moms. Yep, it totally does… because you know where all our kids’ clothes and things are going after we’re done having kids? Yep, consignment. It allows moms to get just a little bit of their investment back, it allows other moms to get what they need for less, and it helps the community as a whole. People forget about this part of it, but it’s probably one of my favorite parts.
It’s fun. You knew I couldn’t leave this out, right? It’s so much fun – there are so many different things to look at, it’s great to go with friends, you get great deals… it’s a win-win. I so look forward to consignment season!
So, now that I’ve shared my favorite reasons, I’ve got a treat for my local readers! If you’re in DC area, you may know that my absolute favorite consignement sale, Just Between Friends, is this weekend… and I’m giving away a “Jump the Line” pass and an 8-hour presale pass! Enter below – I will be picking the winner tomorrow night so get your entries in now!
Have you shopped consignment before? What do you like about it?
Disclosure: I received a gift certificate and early entry to the sale in exchange for this post and corresponding social media, but all opinions are my own. I truly do enjoy this sale and would go anyway!

Hi Jess! I LOVE consignment sales. I’ve been going to them since my son was born and I’m hooked. I have found such great stuff. My husband is always amazed by what I find and the small amount of money I spend. I also look for toys too. Great way to find some Christmas or birthday gifts for my kids.
I love thredUP! It’s kind of like an online consignment store. But I need to hit up our local ones too! I feel like I happen to be busy every time they have one, so I need to check when the next one is!
I am already going too the consignment sale on Saturday so I would love to get in early, I shop almost exclusively for my baby boy at consignment stores and sales.
I totally agree!! Many of Sophie’s clothes are consignment, the rest are handme downs. Any new clothes she has were bought for her my family, we’ve always pick consignment and found the cutest clothes.
