Spreading Cheer

One of my favorite things to do during the holiday season is bake. When I was little, my Nana (my dad’s mom) lived with us, and so many of my holiday childhood memories involve baking with her and my mom. There was one year that I think we made about 14 different types of cookies. It was crazy, but so much fun.

Unfortunately, I just don’t have the time to bake that many cookies nowadays. I still love to bake during the holidays and want to share that with Abbie, but I want it to be fun and easy. Enter Betty Crocker cookie mix.

I’ve been buying Betty Crocker’s cookie mix for years, dating back to college (and maybe before), because I always wanted to be able to make cookies in my dorm kitchen and it was easy. Now that I’m a mom, they’re a fast, easy way to make cookies with my girl.

On Friday, I ran over to Shoppers Food and picked up 3 cookie mixes – sugar, peanut butter, and chocolate chip.

When I got home, I preheated the oven and Abbie and I got to work on the cookies. Now that she’s nearly 3, it’s a lot easier to involve her in these fun projects. She mixed up the dough with me and even helped me roll it out.

We ended up making sugar cookies with lots of sprinkles first, then peanut butter cookies with some crushed chocolate wafers mixed in for some texture. I think Abbie’s favorite part was taste testing.

Once they were cooled, I packaged them up for a surprise for my in-laws! I put this cute basket together for them to kick off the holiday season with some cheer, and we delivered it the next day when we went over to celebrate a second Thanksgiving. Now, true story – I tried to get Abbie to hand it to them, but she had no interest other than getting inside to play. I guess she forgot there were cookies inside!
